Some of the most beautiful weddings aren’t the ones with perfect forecasts or the biggest budgets. They’re the weddings where couples understand the beach, trust their team, and know a few local secrets.

Here are some of our favorite Gulf Shores wedding secrets we wish every bride knew before her wedding day.

Secret #1: Don’t Plan Your Ceremony Exactly at Sunset

This is probably our biggest photography secret. If sunset is at 7:30 PM, you usually don’t want to begin your ceremony at 7:30.

The beautiful light starts before sunset, and some of the most romantic photographs happen after the ceremony as the sun gets lower and the sky begins changing colors. Your ceremony needs enough time for the vows, family photographs, wedding-party pictures and — most importantly — photographs of just the two of you.

Secret #2: A Cloudy Sky Can Be Better Than a Perfect Blue Sky

Brides sometimes see clouds before their ceremony and immediately become worried. We see something completely different. Potential for an incredible sky.

Clouds create dimension, softness, and drama. We’ve photographed Gulf Shores weddings where storms were surrounding us, rain stopped shortly before the ceremony, and the evening ended with one of the most spectacular sunsets imaginable.

Secret #3: Don’t Trust the Weather App Too Much

Welcome to the Gulf Coast! A weather app may show rain all afternoon while the beach in front of you is completely dry. Summer storms can be incredibly localized and fast-moving. It can rain a few miles away while your ceremony location stays beautiful.

Of course, safety always comes first, especially when lightning or severe weather is involved. But don’t let a rain percentage several days before your wedding ruin your excitement. Watch what is actually happening locally and stay in communication with your wedding coordinator.

Secret #4: Wind Matters Almost as Much as Rain

Everyone worries about rain. Experienced beach wedding planners also watch the wind. Wind affects arches, flowers, veils, hairstyles, microphones and even where your ceremony setup should face. One of our favorite options for destination weddings is renting a beautiful beachfront house that allows weddings. After the ceremony, you may be able to continue celebrating at the house instead of moving everyone across town.

Important: Always confirm directly with the property owner or management company that weddings and events are permitted before booking.

Secret #6: Your Guests Need More Instructions Than You Think

You know exactly where your ceremony is. Your guests don’t. Beach access points, parking lots and boardwalks can be confusing to someone visiting Gulf Shores for the first time. Send guests the exact ceremony location and parking instructions ahead of time, and encourage them to arrive early. The last thing you want is Grandma calling you five minutes before the ceremony asking, “Which boardwalk?”

Secret #7: Heels and Sand Are Not Friends

We love beautiful shoes. We don’t love watching someone try to walk through soft Alabama sand in stilettos. Barefoot, sandals, wedges or barefoot bridal jewelry are usually much easier. You can always bring your gorgeous heels for getting-ready photographs or reception pictures.

After the ceremony, everyone is excited. People are hugging, talking, wandering toward the water and occasionally disappearing completely. A long list of 40 different family combinations can take away from the best light of the evening. BEACH FEST NATIONAL BEACH VOLLEYBALL QUALIFIER

May 7–9, 2027
Gulf Shores, Alabama

Thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators travel to Gulf Shores for this nationally recognized beach volleyball tournament. The event takes place in a different area of Gulf Shores than where we typically hold our beach weddings.

If your guests enjoy sports, they can spend part of the day watching the tournament before joining you for your sunset ceremony. Many of our weddings take place at the Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion, where the beach remains peaceful and relaxing in the evening, making it easy to enjoy both the excitement of the tournament and the beauty of a Gulf Coast beach wedding.

HANGOUT MUSIC FESTIVAL

Expected May 2027
Gulf Shores, Alabama

The Hangout Music Festival is expected to return in 2027, although official dates have not yet been announced. The festival takes place near The Hangout at the main public beach and attracts thousands of visitors from across the country.

The good news is that our beach wedding locations are not in the festival area, so your ceremony won't be surrounded by the crowds or music from the event. However, traffic throughout Gulf Shores can be heavier than usual during festival weekend.

If you're planning your wedding during this time, we recommend staying closer to your ceremony location and encouraging your guests to do the same. This helps everyone spend less time in traffic and more time enjoying both your wedding and everything the Gulf Coast has to offer.

PENSACOLA BEACH PRIDE

May 27 to May 30, 2027
Pensacola Beach, Florida

Pensacola Beach Pride welcomes visitors from throughout the Southeast for a weekend of celebration, entertainment, and community events. Hotels and vacation rentals can fill more quickly, and traffic on Pensacola Beach may be heavier than usual.

During Pride weekend, Park East is closed, so we recommend choosing Navarre Beach, Pensacola Beach Park West, or a private beach house for your ceremony. These locations provide beautiful beachfront settings while avoiding the road closures associated with the event.

If you plan to marry during Pride weekend, encourage your guests to book accommodations early and stay as close to your ceremony location as possible for the most relaxed wedding experience.

If you're planning a beach wedding during Blue Angels week, consider Park East, where the beach is typically much quieter than Casino Beach. Many couples also enjoy watching the Blue Angels practice throughout the week before the official air show, creating unforgettable memories and spectacular photo opportunities.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL

The National Shrimp Festival attracts approximately 250,000 visitors each year with fresh Gulf seafood, live music, arts and crafts, and family entertainment.

Most festival activities take place near The Hangout and the main public beach area, where crowds are heaviest throughout the day.

If you're planning a sunset ceremony, the Gulf State Park Beach Pavilion often remains surprisingly peaceful despite the festival, allowing couples to enjoy a relaxed ceremony while guests spend the afternoon exploring the festival.

For weddings on West Beach, allow extra travel time due to increased traffic. A helpful local tip is to drive through Gulf State Park whenever possible, which can often be a less congested route.

Alexandra & Zach's Intimate Johnson's Beach Wedding in Perdido Key

Some weddings are about the guest list. Alexandra and Zach's was about the people who mattered most. Their ceremony at Johnson's Beach in Perdido Key was a close family affair, small on numbers and large on meaning, with every detail chosen on purpose.

The Palette

Alexandra built her design around orchids, cream, and sage green. It's a combination that reads as elegant without trying too hard: the cream keeps things soft, the orchids bring texture and a touch of the tropics, and the sage green ties it all to the coastal setting. Every member of the family wore sage green for the ceremony, which turned the guest circle itself into part of the design. Instead of a few coordinated bridesmaid dresses standing out against a crowd, the whole family became a single, unified backdrop for the couple.

Chairs With Names

The detail that says the most about this wedding might be the smallest one. Each chair at the ceremony was marked with the name of the family member sitting in it. There was no guessing where to sit and no generic seating chart. Every seat was claimed in advance, by name, for someone specific. It's a simple gesture, but it changes the feeling of the whole ceremony: guests aren't just attendees, they're accounted for.
